The basics

Price, accounts and offline play

Is WordHunt free to play?
Yes. WordHunt is completely free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions and no paid hints — every one of the 200 levels and all six modes are available from the moment you install. Advertising pays for the game.
Does WordHunt work without internet?
Yes. Every puzzle is generated and played on your device, so all six modes work in aeroplane mode, on the Metro or anywhere with no signal. Only the ads need a connection, and the game does not stop when they cannot load.
Do I need an account to play WordHunt?
No. There is no sign-up, no login and no email address to give. Open the app and the first puzzle starts. Your progress is saved on your device only.
Are there any in-app purchases?
None at all. Coins are earned by playing and cannot be bought with money. There is no premium tier, no ad-removal payment and no paywall in front of any level.
What is the WordHunt Daily Hunt?
Daily Hunt is one puzzle per day that is identical for every player worldwide. Completing it extends your streak; missing a day resets the streak to zero. It is generated from the date on your device, so it works offline.
How many levels does WordHunt have?
WordHunt has 200 hand-built levels: 20 levels in each of 10 themed worlds. Beyond the campaign, Quick Play, Mystery and Create generate unlimited fresh puzzles, so the game does not run out.
Which Android versions does WordHunt support?
WordHunt runs on Android 7.0 (API level 24) and above, which covers the overwhelming majority of Android phones and tablets in use. It is an Android-only game; there is no iOS version.
Can I send a puzzle to a friend?
Yes. Create a puzzle from your own words, then share the code it generates through any messaging app. The whole puzzle is encoded in the code itself, so nothing is uploaded to a server and neither of you needs an account.
What data does WordHunt collect?
Your progress lives on your device and is deleted when you uninstall — there is no account and no server of ours. Three things go to Google and nowhere else: ads through AdMob, which may use your advertising ID, plus Firebase Analytics and crash reporting. Where consent is required you are asked first, and declining switches all three off. See the privacy policy for the detail.
Is WordHunt suitable for children?
The vocabulary and themes are family-friendly, and School Vocabulary levels track classroom words. WordHunt is not directed at children under 13, and it does contain advertising, so parents should apply their usual judgement.

Modes, levels and sharing

Does WordHunt run out of puzzles?
The 200 campaign levels are finite, but Quick Play, Mystery and Create generate new grids indefinitely, and Daily Hunt adds one every day. You cannot exhaust the game.
What is Mystery mode?
Mystery hides the puzzle’s theme. You deduce it from the words you find. It is harder than a themed grid of the same size because you cannot anticipate what you are searching for.
Can I make my own word search puzzle?
Yes. Create mode takes your own word list and places it into a valid grid. Teachers use it for spelling lists. The result can be played immediately or shared as a code.
How does sharing a puzzle work without a server?
The whole puzzle is encoded inside the share code. Sending the code sends the puzzle, so nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored online, and neither player needs an account.
Is there an iPhone or web version of WordHunt?
No. WordHunt is an Android game distributed through Google Play. There is no iOS app, no web version and no desktop build.
How many achievements are there?
There are 25 achievements, spread across all six modes. They are long-run goals rather than tutorial prompts, and none of them requires spending money.
Technical

Devices, permissions and data

What Android permissions does WordHunt request?
Three device permissions: internet, network state and vibration. Internet and network state serve advertising; vibration drives haptic feedback when a word locks in. The app also declares the advertising ID permission, which AdMob needs to serve ads. It asks for no storage, camera, microphone, contacts or location access.
Does WordHunt work on tablets?
Yes. Any Android device on 7.0 or later is supported, including tablets. Larger screens make the 14×14 Expert grids considerably more comfortable to read.
Can I turn the ads off?
There is no payment to remove ads, because there are no in-app purchases at all. Ads need a connection, so playing in aeroplane mode is the practical way to avoid them.
Does WordHunt collect analytics or crash reports?
Yes, both through Google Firebase, and both are off until you are asked for consent. Analytics records which screens and modes get used; Crashlytics records diagnostics when the app crashes. Neither captures what you type, the puzzles you create or the words you find. Where consent is required, declining switches off analytics, crash reporting and personalised ads together.
Will I lose progress if I change phone?
Yes. Progress is stored only on your device and there is no account to sync it. That is the direct trade-off for having no account system and no server of our own.
Still stuck?

Something not working?

Six of the most common problems, with fixes, are on the support page.

My progress disappeared. Can I get it back?
Progress is stored only on your device, so it cannot be restored from a server. Uninstalling the app, clearing its storage or moving to a new phone will clear it. There is no account to sync from.
An ad is stuck on screen or will not close.
Press the Android back button once, then force-stop the app from Settings and reopen it. Your level progress is saved as you play, so you will not lose it. If it keeps happening, get in touch with your device model.
A share code from a friend will not open.
Share codes are long, and messaging apps sometimes break them across lines or trim the end. Ask your friend to resend it, copy the whole code including any trailing characters, and paste it rather than typing it out.
