A 14×14 grid is not just a 10×10 grid with more letters. Somewhere around 12×12, the strategies that work on small boards stop working, and the reason is not that the puzzle is more intellectually demanding — it is that your attention runs out of capacity to track what it has already covered.

Understanding the specific failure lets you work around it.

Why do large grids break normal scanning?

Because you lose track of where you have been.

On an 8×8 board with 64 cells, you can hold a rough mental map of the areas you have covered. On a 14×14 board with 196 cells, you cannot. Your eyes cross the same region repeatedly while other regions go unvisited, and you have no reliable sense of which is which.

The scale of the problem is worth spelling out. On a 14×14 grid using all eight directions, the number of possible straight runs of five or more letters is in the high hundreds. Unstructured scanning is sampling from that space at random, with no memory of what has been sampled.

There is a second effect. Attention is drawn to the centre of a bounded field, so the edges of a large grid get disproportionately little coverage — and the effect is stronger the larger the field.

How do you divide a 14×14 grid into sectors?

Four quadrants of roughly 7×7, completed one at a time.

Draw the lines in your head — or better, use a finger or the edge of your other hand on the screen as a physical divider. Then:

  1. Work the top-left quadrant exhaustively: rows, then columns, then diagonals, within that quadrant only.
  2. Move to top-right, then bottom-left, then bottom-right.
  3. Finally, sweep the two dividing lines — the central cross — because words crossing a boundary are the ones your quadrant passes will have missed.

A 7×7 region is small enough that the same attention that fails on the full board works reliably within it. You are not scanning faster; you are scanning something small enough to track.

Step three is not optional. Roughly a third of the words on a full grid will cross a quadrant boundary somewhere, and those are exactly the words that a quadrant-by-quadrant approach is prone to skip.

Should you still hunt rare letters on a big grid?

Yes — more than ever. It is the technique that scales best.

Rare-letter hunting works by turning a search for a six-letter string into a search for a single character. On a small grid that saves time. On a large grid it is close to the only thing that works, because the alternative — reading every string — is now hundreds of operations.

The approach, per word:

  1. Identify the rarest letter in the target: J, Q, X, Z first, then K, V, B, W.
  2. Scan the current quadrant for that letter alone.
  3. At each occurrence, check the eight directions radiating from it.

Combining sector discipline with rare-letter hunting is the core large-grid method. One reduces the area; the other reduces what you are looking for within it.

How do you handle reversed and diagonal words?

Deliberately, because they will not appear on their own.

Fluent reading is automatic and directional. You cannot switch off left-to-right processing, which means a reversed word genuinely does not register even when you look straight at it. On Hard and Expert grids, where all eight directions are in play, roughly half the words will be running in a direction your reading brain does not parse.

Three practical countermeasures:

  • Search for the last letter, not the first. If you are hunting FALCON, look for the N. It works identically for forward and reversed placements.
  • Do an explicit right-to-left sweep of each quadrant after the left-to-right one. It feels absurd and it finds words.
  • Rotate the device. Turning the phone 90 or 180 degrees makes vertical words horizontal and reversed words forward. This is the highest-value trick on this page and almost nobody uses it.

Diagonals need their own treatment. Rather than trying to see all diagonals at once, trace them: put a finger at a corner of the quadrant and follow one diagonal line at a time. Slow, but diagonals are where large-grid words hide most successfully.

How should you manage a timed Expert puzzle?

Change strategy as the clock runs down, rather than doing the same thing faster.

Expert grids in most games — including WordHunt, where Expert is the only timed preset — combine a 14×14 board, 12 to 15 words, all eight directions, and a clock. Panic-scanning is the standard failure, and it is strictly worse than structured scanning.

The endgame switch is counterintuitive but correct. Short words have the most possible positions on the board, which makes them the hardest to find deliberately and the easiest to find by chance. When you have ninety seconds and four words left, unstructured scanning of the whole board for three-and four-letter targets genuinely outperforms a careful quadrant sweep you do not have time to finish.

Also: take the hint. If a game's scoring rewards completion and momentum, spending a hint at the 60-second mark to protect a finish is almost always the right trade — particularly where hints are earned by playing rather than bought.

What about the physical setup?

It matters more than it sounds, and it is the easiest thing to fix.

On a 14×14 grid on a phone, each cell is around 5 millimetres square. That is genuinely small, and the strain accumulates over a session.

  • Turn the text size up. Most word games offer several steps; WordHunt has four. Larger letters cost nothing and reduce errors.
  • Use high-contrast mode if the app has one. Distinguishing letters in a dense field is a contrast problem before it is a size problem.

What structure buys you is not speed so much as not stalling. The frustrating experience on a large grid is not slowness, it is scanning for four minutes and finding nothing. Quadrant discipline eliminates that, because progress within a 7×7 region is steady and visible.
