What matters is not how long you spend on a screen but whether the activity has an end. Puzzle games are self-limiting, single-tasking and free of variable rewards, which makes them restorative in a way infinite feeds are not. Total screen time is a poor measure of anything.
"Screen time" as a single number is close to useless. It counts a video call with a grandparent, a two-hour scroll, a chapter of an ebook and a crossword as the same quantity of the same substance. They are not the same thing, and the differences between them matter far more than the total.
A more useful question: does this activity end?
Why is "does it end?" the right question?
Because activities with an end produce satisfaction, and activities without one produce depletion.
A word search finishes. There is a moment when the last word is found and the puzzle is complete, and that moment is the natural stopping point. You put the phone down having done a thing.
A feed does not finish. There is no state in which a social feed is complete, because it is designed not to have one. Sessions therefore end for one of two reasons: you were interrupted, or you got tired enough to stop. Neither feels like completion, which is why people report finishing a scroll feeling vaguely worse and finishing a puzzle feeling fine.
This is the single largest difference between screen activities, and it has nothing to do with duration. Twenty minutes of puzzles and twenty minutes of scrolling are the same number on a screen-time report and completely different experiences.
What are the properties of restorative screen time?
Four, and they tend to appear together.
1. It is finite. There is a defined completion state — a puzzle solved, an article finished, a call ended.
2. It is single-tasking. One thing at a time, in one place, with no competing streams. Feeds are the opposite by construction: every item is a potential branch.
3. It has no variable reward. Variable-ratio reinforcement — a reward arriving unpredictably — is the most powerful schedule known for producing persistent behaviour, and it is what makes pull-to-refresh compelling. A puzzle has none. You either find the word or you do not, and finding it is the same each time.
4. It is not social-comparative. Nothing about a word search invites you to measure yourself against anyone else's life.
A word search happens to satisfy all four. That is not an accident of virtue; it is a consequence of the format being older than attention-optimised design.
Does it matter that puzzle games are still on a phone?
Somewhat, and it is worth being straight about the caveats.
The device is the problem, not the app. A phone containing a puzzle also contains everything else. The puzzle does not interrupt you, but the notifications arriving over it do. Playing in aeroplane mode is a genuinely useful trick here, and for offline games it also removes the ads.
Puzzle games can be engineered for retention too. Streaks, daily rewards, energy systems and purchase prompts at moments of frustration are all present in parts of the category. Blue light and sleep are separate questions from the content of the activity, and they apply to a puzzle at midnight as much as to anything else.
Do puzzle games actually improve focus?
They give you practice at sustained single-task attention, which is genuinely uncommon now. Whether that transfers to focus in general is much less clear, and the honest answer is probably not much.
The wider evidence on cognitive training is consistent and not very encouraging: people improve at the tasks they practise, and improvement rarely transfers to untrained abilities. A 2010 study in Nature led by Adrian Owen, with over 11,000 participants, found exactly this pattern, and a comprehensive 2016 review by Simons and colleagues reached similar conclusions across the literature. So the realistic claim is narrower and still worth something: a word search is fifteen minutes of doing one thing, deliberately, without switching. That is a shape of attention many people rarely practise any more. It is not brain training, and calling it that oversells it.
How does it compare with other things you might do?

The bottom row of that table is the interesting one. A puzzle game with an energy system has an artificial ending — you stop because the game stopped you, not because you finished. That is a different experience from completing something, and it is engineered to make waiting uncomfortable enough that you pay to skip it.
The ebook row is worth a second look too. A chapter is a soft ending rather than a hard one: nothing stops you continuing, but there is a natural place to put the book down, and most people take it. That suggests the useful property is not a wall that halts you but a visible, frequent stopping point you can accept without feeling cut off. Puzzles have one every few minutes. Feeds are built specifically not to.
This also explains why the same app can sit in two different rows depending on how it is configured. A word game played one puzzle at a time behaves like the top row. The same word game played with autoplay into the next level, a streak to protect and a notification every evening starts to behave like the bottom one. The format sets the ceiling; the settings decide where you actually land.
What does a reasonable relationship with this look like?
Five practical suggestions, none of which requires an app to enforce.
Play with a completion in mind. "One puzzle" is a better plan than "some puzzles". A session with a target ends on a success.
Use it in the gaps, not instead of the good things. A commute, a queue, ten minutes before sleep. Puzzle games are excellent at filling time that was otherwise going to be filled by a feed.
Play offline where you can. Aeroplane mode removes ads and notifications simultaneously, and for games that generate puzzles on the device it costs you nothing. Testing whether a word game really works offline takes two minutes.
Notice how a session ends. Did you finish, or did you drift? Drift is the signal that the activity has stopped being the good version of itself.
Let streaks break when they need to. A streak that makes you play at 11:50pm to protect a number has inverted the relationship.
The honest summary
A word search is not going to make you smarter, improve your memory, or protect your cognition. The evidence does not support any of that, and claims to the contrary are marketing.
What it will do is occupy fifteen minutes pleasantly, end when it is finished, and leave you no worse than it found you. Given what most alternatives on a phone do, that is a genuinely good outcome, and it does not need dressing up as anything more.
